The
Place

In Portuguese ‘Fonte’ means source of water or fountain, and ‘Souto’ is a chestnut grove. The combination of the two words in the estate’s name symbolises the abundance of water from the estate’s natural springs and its beautiful chestnut groves.

Quinta da Fonte Souto is a new wine project from the Symington family in the exciting Portalegre sub-region of the Alto Alentejo in southern Portugal.

It was always going to take something special for us to take our first steps beyond the Douro, and with this stunning property situated at a relatively high altitude within the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park to the east of the hot Alentejo plain, we believe we have found all the conditions we were looking for.

This is a long-term project with the objective of putting the unique terroir of this sub-region on the map, for wine lovers in Portugal and elsewhere around the world.

The
Wines

Our goal at Quinta da Fonte Souto is to produce a distinctive range of estate wines that showcase the very best of Portalegre, the Alentejo and Portugal.

Taifa 2020

White

Technical info

Taking its name from the small principalities and kingdoms created in the Iberian Peninsula during the Moorish period, Taifa is crafted with exceptional precision and quality, honouring the unique terroir that produced it.

Made using only the very finest white grapes from Quinta da Fonte Souto, Taifa reveals incredible freshness and complexity, reflecting its proximity to the São Mamede mountain range.

With Taifa, we pursue even more selective harvesting, favouring specific, mature vineyard plots and bring picking forward to ensure higher acidity. A portion of the wine is vinified in new French oak barrels, enhancing structure and a sense of volume.

Vinha do Souto

Red

Technical info

This is Fonte Souto’s finest red wine, named after the beautiful chestnut groves that lie close to the vineyards from which the grapes are sourced, namely the finest parcels of Alicante Bouschet and Syrah, which contribute virtually equal parts to the debut 2017 wine.

The low yields of these vines result in a concentrated, elegantly structured, precise wine that reflects the remarkable freshness provided by the property’s privileged higher altitude position on the slopes of the Serra de São Mamede, above the hotter and drier Alentejo plain.

Quinta da Fonte
Souto 2018

Red

Technical info

The two core Fonte Souto estate wines embody all the strengths of the property’s unique terroir: the freshness and balance afforded by the altitude; the concentration, which derives from mature, low-yielding vines, and the complexity and structure provided by the judicious combination of grape varieties.

The backbone of the red is the signature Alicante Bouschet variety with important contributions from Trincadeira, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Alfrocheiro. The white is a sublime expression of the Arinto variety, widely regarded as Portugal’s finest white grape, with a smaller contribution of Verdelho.

Rosé 2022

Rosé

Technical info

Quinta da Fonte Souto Rosé emerged from a small experimental plot of Aragonez grapes on the hillside vineyards of the estate in the São Mamede mountain range. Initially vinified as a test, its surprising quality, balance and freshness led to the decision to bottle it as the first rosé wine made by the Symington family.

The winemaking approach was meticulous but minimalist, using low temperatures and very few movements and interventions. The goal was to preserve its freshness and delicate aromas, achieving a faithful expression of Aragonez framed by the terroir of the property.

Alfrocheiro 2019

Red

Technical info

Alfrocheiro is the first in a limited series of varietal wines from Quinta da Fonte Souto, highlighting unique expressions of the Portalegre estate. The alfrocheiro variety from Fonte Souto expresses a perfect balance between the fresh and aromatic profile provided by altitude and the variety’s inherent intensity and structure. In 2019, the variety matured excellently and, as a result, we decided to produce this limited edition wine with incredible balance and great ageing potential.

Alicante Bouschet

Red

Technical info
Fonte Souto’s Alicante Bouschet embodies all the strengths of the property’s unique terroir: the freshness and balance afforded by the altitude and the complexity and structure provided by mature, low-yielding vines. This single varietal Alicante Bouschet is the first from Quinta da Fonte Souto, made from grapes sourced from three mature vineyards (25 years+), planted at just over 500 metres/1,640 feet.

The Alicante Bouschet variety found a second home in Portugal — and in the Alentejo in particular — in the early 20th century and has since become one of the region’s signature red varieties.

Florão 2022

Florão 2019

The Florão wines represent the most approachable Fonte Souto style, made with all the attention to detail and care of the other estate wines but with a more youthful profile intended for drinking young.

The cooler Fonte Souto microclimate is ideal for crafting well-balanced and structured wines with a distinctive identity whose signature characteristics are liveliness, freshness and elegance.
